“Why don’t I just TALK to them?”

All this talk of Failures of Sentience, and relearning to see things as others see them – one question might come to you:

“Why bother with reading, rereading and applying Your Story Isn’t About You? If I want to learn what others think, I’ll just talk to them!”

Ah, I see…

Some questions of my own:

Are we more divided and outraged at each other than we were, say, 30 years ago?

Is it easier to communicate with strangers now than it was, say, 30 years ago?

Interesting, no? It’s almost as if being able to talk to each other isn’t enough. Based on how people “talk to each other” online, the issue isn’t talking – it’s listening and genuinely considering what they say.

“I don’t need to learn about Failures of Sentience to understand other people. I can just talk to them!” – that’s the same reasoning as “I don’t need a rocket. I can just go to space!”

If you can go to space without a rocket, great.

For most of us, that’s how we do that.

And overcoming your Failures of Sentience is how you talk with (not talk at or talk over – talk with) other people.
