A decade or so ago, you could find an English language magazine published by Islamic terrorists. This was before they got all savvy with social media.

It was a hilarious read, filled with cultural gaps and weird phrasing. I’d share my favourite only it would put me on a watch list.

Anyway, they had an article on whether freedom fighters were allowed to use stolen infidel weapons. Apparently the Koran is strict on this – no, you can’t. Make your own weapons. If you claim a cache of weapons in the spoils of war, you can’t use them for holy war.

But many freedom fighters wanted to, obviously. Western guns were better than theirs by any measure.

So they discussed this in this article.

I predicted their conclusion. You probably can too. In their own words, the Koran emphatically and unambiguously forbids this. But the Koran also tells you to serve Allah, and using those guns helps you do that, so it’s okay.

Shocking twist.

You can tell what happened here. They wanted a specific answer, so they twisted themselves – and logic – into pretzels to get it. They decided that, yes, it’s okay, then went back to figure out how they could justify that.

Does that sound familiar?

A woke virtue is tolerance – fair enough, that’s a good one. And that soon leads to a genuine question: should you tolerate intolerant viewpoints?

That’s a nuanced question, worthy or real consideration –

Oh, no, they’ve already decided no and now have to justify it.

See, hating on “intolerant” people is just too much fun. It fills them with a righteousness that’s hard to come by while also believing in moral relativism. They don’t want to give that up, but they don’t want to give up thinking of themselves as tolerant either.

So, yes, it’s perfectly tolerant to for woke folk to hate anyone who disagrees with them. Phew!

You can put this to the test: ask them if they tolerate Islam. The likely answer is an emphatic yes – a woke American will tolerate Islam but not Republicans, then justify it with “I don’t tolerate intolerance”. Then point out how mainstream intolerant mainstream Islam is, by any measure. Sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia… “Not all Muslims! ” Right – the woke will tolerate anyone who happens to agree with them. That’s not tolerance. That’s the opposite of it.

Tolerance means tolerating people you don’t like. The woke fail by this measure catastrophically.

“Why pick on the woke for this! Conservatives do the same thing!” Not really. Conservatives love capitalism and capitalism is truly inclusive. It doesn’t care who or what you are, only what value you offer society. “Only in theory! Real capitalism is racist!” If other companies won’t hire minorities, then you can start your own company and hire them. You’ll make a fortune and do a social good as well.

You can start your own company­ – that little snippet is why capitalism is the best. That’s not true under other systems.

In fact, capitalism is so inclusive you can – and people have – make a fortune selling anticapitalism. Put a hammer and sickle on a shirt, and watch as idiot uni students hand you fistfuls of cash.

That’s what tolerance looks like.

Anyway, this probably has something to do with personal development. Finding the connection is left as an exercise to the reader.

Maybe you don’t remember The Secret.

(Lucky you.)

It was the popular book a few years ago, teaching you how to live your dream life. Wealth, freedom, love – whatever you wanted, you could get it through the Law of Attraction.

The Law of Attraction says that if you focus on what you want, visualise it and feel gratitude, then it will magically come to you.

Eh, fine, I suppose it’s not the worst idea out there. Gratitude for what you have is a beautiful thing. Visualisation can be part of a strategy for success.

But visualisation alone isn’t enough. Even if the universe works by the Law of Attraction, you need to do the work to become the sort of person who’ll attract what you want. You need to reflect on your failures and take action. Daydreaming about your wishes won’t do much.

It’s a lazy shortcut. Believing The Secret is enough means you don’t have to do anything difficult.

So I’m not a fan of the book.

But I will defend it on one count.

People accuse it of blaming victims. If you live in abuse or poverty, then (according to The Secret) it’s because you didn’t wish hard enough!

No, no, no.

That’s not how advice works.

If The Secret works, then people in poverty haven’t used it.

If diets work, then fat people haven’t followed them.

And if jobs liberate women, then housewives only have themselves to blame.

Your problems are caused by <X> – do <Y> instead. That’s the essence of all good advice, assuming <Y> works. If that’s blaming the victim, then so is every useful statement.

Anyway, I’m not a fan of The Secret.

If you want something, you still have to work for it.

And visualisation is a weak technique. If you want something bad enough, you deserve a better technique than that.

In fact, forget The Secret.

You need something real and grounded in good Christian principles.

Maybe Christians should steal tactics from the woke folk. They’re doing well in the culture war, right? So maybe we should preach the way they talk about pronouns:

Wait…

No, that’s fucking weak and pathetic. Throwing a tantrum because folks don’t immediately and completely do what you want? That’s no way to persuade anyone.

Mate, that’s no way to live.

We’re better than that, but then so is sludge poured from an old gumboot.

There are plenty of reasons why woke folk screech like this. One is straight up Failures of Sentience. They feel a certain way about themselves and can’t get that not everyone else agrees. Another is they’ve set themselves up against truth. Living a lie is taxing – it shreds the nerves.

You can hear the truth leak out when they speak. “A man who identifies as a woman is a woman!” Then why did they call him a man at the start there? Often they’ll use a twisted term like AMAB or biological male, but they’ll often use man instead. They wouldn’t if they believed what they were saying.

Stoicism teaches you to like reality, because the alternative is spiritual degradation.

Woke gender theory teaches you to hate reality, because feelings matter more than chromosomes, organs and hormones.

No wonder they’re so hysterical – not angry, not frustrated, but hysterical. A good man can always take refuge in the truth. They can’t.

That must be so lonely.

Remember – anger is a sin, especially the way they let it control them.

Someone can spend decades thinking they want to be a doctor, influencer, solider or athlete… only to find they hate it.

That they never wanted it.

How does that work?

More importantly, what can you do about it? How do you stop yourself from wasting decades pursing a goal you don’t even like?

If you’ve ever been a client of mine, you’ve likely experienced the best answer to that. You might even consciously know it.

Pray.

You want the truth to a difficult question? Then clasp your hands, close your eyes and get on your knees.

Ask God for guidance – it’s the greatest lifehack there is. In theory, you shouldn’t need any coaching, mentorship or even advice. The Holy Spirit has everything you need.

That means my business model is obsolete. Every book, every coaching call, every email I send comes from a flawed mortal. The best guidance I can offer is Divine Truth filtered through an ape’s brain.

So why listen to me? Why not go straight for the source?

Well, as I said, in theory…

I’m no theologian, but I know God isn’t just going to do everything for you. You need to figure out some of it on your own.

And together. Sometimes, God answers your prayers through fellowship.

And serendipity.

Can you be successful and miserable?

I’ve studied quite a bit of psychology.

Not academic psychology, but how folks think, change and function in the real world.

One of my many areas of study?

What my mentor called dirty goals – something we’ve all experienced. A dirty goal is when you tell yourself you want something and you go after it hard. There’s no lying to yourself, though. Maybe you study to be a doctor to please your parents, maybe you travel because that’s how you’re “supposed to” enjoy yourself.

But if you don’t actually want that, you’ll resist it. And your resistance will pop up in strange ways.

Your motivation might oscillate like a hyperactive child’s yo-yo.

You might find yourself being really unskilled at simple tasks. Key definitions slip your mind, your hand twitches at the wrong moment, almost as if you’re sabotaging yourself.

You could even develop health issues. I’m not a doctor so I can’t talk to that, but I’ve heard stories of that happening.

But if you avoid (or ignore) all the resistance that pops up on your way to success, then dirty goals tend to lead to one place:

Misery.

You might bust your arse for a decade to reach the summit… only to find it bleak, disappointing and unsatisfying. If you’re a doctor and find you hate your job, you can’t just quit. You probably have loans to pay off and, besides, that’d be embarrassing.

So how do you avoid this?

Ask your typical midwit life coach that question and you’ll get the same answer:

“Don’t listen to what other people tell you to do. Focus on what YOU want!”

It’s terrible advice.

Doing something because others want that for you doesn’t automatically make it a dirty goal. Your parents might want you to be a doctor because they know you’d thrive in that career. It’s common, though, to follow a dirty goal while trying to please others.

But doing what you want is no guarantee of happiness.

You might have a passion for drawing. So you turn that into your career! Etsy! Patreon! You make money doing what you want!

… only to find that doing it for work has killed your passion for drawing.

You’ve made mistakes before, even with the big stuff. Who’s to say you won’t make those same mistakes again?

It’s almost as if sometimes listening to others is a bad idea and sometimes doing your own thing is a bad idea.

Life’s complex and nuanced. There’s no decent advice that fits on a bumper sticker.

So… how does this help you?

If you can’t rely on yourself or others, who do you rely on?

One answer is to rely on God. Pray on the answer – that’s never the wrong choice.

If you still need some extra clarity or guidance, though?

Well, remember how I said you can’t lie to yourself – that your unconscious knows the score and will resist if you go against what you really want?

That doesn’t have to be a one-way conversation.

When you stop lying to yourself, you can then start to listen to your unconscious.

It’s not perfect but – between your unconscious mind and God – you’ll get the best answers to the big questions you can hope for.

That’s something I often do with my clients. When studying dirty goals, I soon learned how to keep folks from falling into them.

You’ve likely heard the cliché before:

“Christians aren’t discriminated against! But when you’re used to special treatment, equal treatment feels like discrimination!”

Ooh!

Tell me more about this special treatment that Christianity gets!

No, go on, tell me. Don’t be shy. I want to wave my crucifix around and get something awesome.

Having been an atheist and now a Christian, I have no idea what special treatment Christians supposedly get. You can’t talk about the tax exemptions churches get – for one thing, all religious organisations get that. For another, that only helps me because I know my donations go to my church, not my government.

Christians don’t get privileges under the law. We aren’t portrayed well in popular culture – in fact, Christianity is the one faith the woke folk in charge have the balls to go after. Well, maybe Judaism too these days, and that only took a brutal genocide to earn that.

Christianity receives no special treatment.

It sure as manure deserves it, though.

Imagine two men stranded on a desert island. Is it fair to split the coconuts equally between them? Yes. But what if one of the men gathers all the coconuts, builds a water catchment system out of fronds and maintains their signal fire. Meanwhile, the other guy does nothing but complain about what a bad job the first guy’s doing, while occasionally stealing coconut water from the first guy when he passes out from exhaustion.

In that case, equal coconuts is unfair. One of them is doing all the work to keep them both alive and get rescued. The other is a parasite. They’re not equal by effort or impact, so why should they get equal coconuts?

And that’s why Christianity really does deserve special treatment. It’s one of the pillars of the greatest civilisations the world has ever seen. That’s no coincidence. A Christian society has better people and better citizens.

Yes, yes, I know. Some Christians are bad people. Some non-Christians are good. If you’re incapable of generalising, then please don’t vote – you’re not qualified to do so.

This is generally how the world works. If you’re a person of character and you do better deeds, you’ll get more rewards. It’s a common way of moving from rags to riches – study, work hard and have integrity.

Be better and you’ll earn more.

It’s the closest thing to a guarantee of success you’ll ever find.

And if I’m wrong? Then you’ll just have to endure being a righteous gentleman who can sleep well at night.

A few months ago, I came across a poll in an online self-improvement group:

Choose one:

* Erotica

* Alcohol

* Blaming others

* Success and happiness

I get where this was going, but it was fairly pretentious. I was feeling cheeky, so I replied:

“Alcohol. If it’s good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me.”

It didn’t take long for some champion of the people to reply with:

“Drunkards don’t go to heaven.”

Yeah… okay. Thanks for the insight, spud.

Look, I get it. My joke wasn’t funny and it wasn’t clever. If someone doesn’t laugh at it, hey, I don’t blame you.

But how does a functioning adult not recognise that as a joke? Did they really think I was choosing alcohol over success and happiness?

I kept trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here, like maybe he was joking too. But I think he was serious.

Not laughing at jokes is one thing. Not spotting jokes when they cross your path – is that a mental illness? It’s missing a fundamental aspect of the human experience that undermines your ability to function in the world.

On the topic of missing fundamental aspects…

Some folks have aphantasia – the inability to make pictures in their minds. Some of them don’t even realise they’re different. When you can’t compare your inner experience to another’s, it’s easy to miss what you’re missing.

Some folks can’t remember their dreams.

Some folks can’t even access their own emotions. They feel numb, inside and out. They have to rely on body language cues – clenches fists, rapid breathing – to know they’re even angry.

The interesting thing?

You can change any of those.

With practice, you can learn to make pictures in your mind. You can remember your dreams. You can feel your emotions even deeper – or learn to regulate them better. And you can learn to first spot jokes, then appreciate them.

They’re all skills. Most folks learn them as part of growing up, but it’s never too late to.

And if you can learn those, rewiring your neurology on a basic level…

… what else can you learn?

More focus, more confidence and more clarity are easy compared to those. It’s easier to install an app than to tinker with an operating system.

That might seem obvious to you, but it’s not common sense.

How often do you hear folks make demands on society?

Society should respect my field more.

Society should learn to stop misgendering me.

I deserve respect – why won’t society give me any?

Women should respect men more.

Men should pay women just for existing.

On and on it goes…

Fire up a random SikTok video and you’ll likely see someone getting outraged. Sometimes, that anger is fair enough. Never does it remember, though, that society is other people.

You want it to change? Don’t forget that you’re one person and society is millions of them. You have to make a compelling point if you expect all those millions of people to make your life easier, you know.

It’s not impossible. That’s exactly how Christianity spread, slavery ended and communism fell.

But you can’t get all angry about a situation and expect it to change. You’d resist if someone made selfish demands on you, in anger. Multiply that frustration by millions – that’s what you’re up against.

That’s why a classic tactic in influence is to show what’s in it for them.

How did America end slavery? Partly – and I emphasise partly – was by pointing out the benefits. New World slavery was a moral blight, contrary to Christianity and most secular thinking of the time. Ending it improved reputations and eased consciences.

Freeing the slaves also freed the slaveowners, even if not all of them recognised that.

“Are you saying that the owners of the slaves had it just as bad as their slaves???” When a volcano erupted, it burned a village and shook a table. Those two things aren’t of the same magnitude, but they occurred together. The idea of anyone equating them is moronic – a hysterical reaction you had to the idea that anything good could benefit someone bad. If you hate the idea that freeing the slaves benefited the slaveowners, then that’s your major malfunction. Grow up.

My point is, no one will do anything solely for your benefit. Want them to do you a solid? Explain why it’s what they want to do.

The pronoun police on SikTok could learn that lesson. I’m sick of telling people not to misgender me! Great. Have you tried being patronising, petulant and narcissistic? Oh, in that case, have you tried something that might work?

There’s more to influence than this. It’s not like Jesus or pickup artists showing a list of pros and cons for their ideas.

But if you ask what’s in it for them, you’ll keep your thinking on them, not you.

Influencing someone is about what they want. Influencing society is that times millions.

You won’t see what they want through your own unresolved issues.

And they won’t hear you over the sound of your teeth grating, nerves snapping and anxiety humming.

If you want to move hearts and change minds, it takes working on yourself first.

As a Christian, you already have most of what you need to succeed.

But you’re clearly missing something critical. After all, you’ve been struggling like this for a while.

Recently spotted on Facebarf: a stunning and brave intellectual criticising Elon Musk.

Now, they weren’t criticising him for his reckless attitudes on artificial intelligence.

Or the health risks, privacy concerns or existential risk of NeuraLink.

Or the dangers of one man dominating so many unrelated industries.

They didn’t even comment on his needlessly combative attitude.

(Disclosure: I’m an Elon fan. But there’s only one Man who’s above criticism – our Lord and Saviour. If Elon turns out to be the Second Coming of Christ, I’ll withdraw the above remarks. Somehow, I doubt I’ll have to.)

Where was I…?

Oh, right.

No, this fine thinker shared this rusty nugget of wisdom:

“Elon’s fanboys all say he’s saving the world. But when you ask them exactly how, they can’t answer you.”

Can you spot the lie?

It should be bleedingly obvious.

Here’s a hint: I bet you a thousand bucks they never asked any Elon fans that question. If they had, they would have gotten a dozen answers back in the first breath.

I mean, is the stereotypical Elon fan someone who’d hold back from talking about how great he is? Someone who’d hold their tongue at a chance like this?

Really?

No, they’d talk about how all his businesses align with saving civilisation – from protecting the environment to defending free speech to helping humans keep up with AI to getting us off this lonely, vulnerable rock and into space. That’s his mission. That’s why he lives so modestly for someone with his net worth, pouring most of his wealth back into his projects.

You’d struggle to shut them up once they got started.

Even if you disagree with every point they make, you can’t miss them making it. To think they can’t back up their faith in him with specifics isn’t merely wrong – it’s also bizarre.

So why did this sophisticated critic say Elon fanboys can’t tell you how he’s saving the world?

I can’t read minds, so I don’t know.

But I can guess. One thing I’ve noticed, especially on media, is folks regurgitating memes in place of thinking.

My outgroup believes a thing deeply – but when you ask them for details, they can’t give any. That used to be an accusation. Now, it’s a generic insult. Is there a group you don’t like? Just say that about them! It doesn’t even need to make sense! Don’t choke on the irony of accusing them of not thinking their beliefs through while flinging this line around – irony is for thinkers!

Another classic: I’m not drunk enough to follow your logic here. The first person to say that was clever. It’s a surprising turn of phrase and quite cutting, too. Now, though, it’s so played out that it doesn’t mean that anymore. Use that line to tell people you don’t understand what someone else is saying… but also you regurgitate what you hear unthinkingly and you don’t know how alcohol works. But the gap in understanding is definitely on their end.

There’s no time to think on social media. All you have time for is expressing your outrage and moving on. Faster, faster! More folks’re wrong on the internet! They need to know you disagree! Throw a meme their way and move on!

It’s such a waste. That’s the worst part of it all. All these folks just screaming into the void, eroding their own understanding and mental health, all to enrich evil corporations that are wicked even by evil corporation standards. It could easily be a force for good and still profitable, but, hey, why support civilisation when you can erode it, right?

If that’s how social media is now, then let it be. Let woke folk scream clichés at every hallucinated slight. That’s what they’re good at. Us normal folks should just leave them to it. Their echo chambers will consume themselves soon enough. No one stays pure in their eyes forever.

If you have to respond, respond with grace, virtue and – above all – original thought. You’re made for more than being a glitchy, twitchy receptacle for targeted advertising and psychological experiments.

You probably have a sense of that – an awareness that life is (or at least should be) more that getting mad at bots and mentally ill strangers.

In fact, life could be quite glorious if you let it.

What would a glorious life look like? I’m sure you can easily answer what a good life is like – constantly feeling a warm tingle in your chest, nourished by the gentle glow of energy that comes from enjoying meaningful work, great friends and love.

But what does glory mean to you?

What would it take for you to amaze yourself?

Maybe you have an inkling about that.

Maybe you can feel the pride and purpose inflating your chest, even if you’re not sure how to live a glorious life.

I don’t know.

That’s something we can discuss, though.

There’s no feeling quite like it.

Every now and then, I see hippie groups on social media yearn for a revolution. The folks in charge are ruining the planet – it’s time to kick them out, with force if necessary!

It’s a bad idea. The sort of person who thrives in a chaotic, violent context isn’t going to be sympathetic to their green energy targets.

But it’s barely any dumber than you wanting a revolution.

Violent upheaval is the work of the Enemy. Riots, revolutions, coups – they rarely make things better. It usually leaves society broken and scarred afterwards. It makes things worse, not better, no matter what side you’re on.

If people overthrow the government, then maybe the woke idiots, the predators among the elite and the corrupt politicians will end up in gaol. More likely, they’ll end up in charge.

Besides, it’s just a daydream.

You really think you could defeat the governments of the West? They won’t let go lightly.

Even if you could, should you?

No, you defeat the Enemy of Civilisation through anything but violence. It’s a last resort, the last refuge of the incompetent.

The Enemy can’t resist a civilisation of good people working together.

That’s why it tries to create weak people and disharmony.

Rise above it, shed your bloodlust and learn how to fight on the level you need to.
