Patching up your inner garrisons

Mindscapes – it’s easy to think of your mind as a vast, complex terrain.

Of course it is. Genetically, you’re a nomadic persistence hunter and gatherer. You have a deep appreciation for territory hardwired into your brain by countless generations of evolution.

Like a wild landscape, your mind has some features that don’t change and others that do. It holds rich resources, hidden secrets and entire ecologies. Things grow, interact in unpredictable ways and then fade away.

That’s your brain and that’s the untamed wilds.

But, of course, neither you nor the world are completely untamed. We built cities, you learned etiquette.

Civilisation is rich, beauty and nourishing, just like nature. Likewise, your natural instincts combined with your sophisticated learnings is majestic to behold. Thank you for every useful skill you’ve ever learned – it makes the world a better place.

I’m sure I have a point to all this.

Ah, yes, that’d be it.

Your mind contains fortresses, castles and garrisons. Metaphorically? Obviously, since the mind itself is a metaphor. Neurons exist. The brain exists. The mind, though? That’s harder to point to.

That doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter. You can’t point to love either, but it shapes and guides as all in some way.

Treat these garrisons as real because they’re real enough. They’re the strong points in your mind – convictions, beliefs and cornerstones of your identity that keep you and your mind safe.

And sometimes they need a little maintenance.

Like every strong thing, it’s only strong when it’s able to rest, repair and grow. Yang needs yin – the tai chi symbol teaches us that.

The Soul Citadel is no different.

It’s a vast, impressive garrison in your mind, humming with untapped power, brilliance, creativity, wisdom and strength.

And it’s out there somewhere, waiting for you to go on a quest to find it.

“It’s the journey that matters, not the destination.” Untrue – they’re both important. The quest matters, as does the reward. That’s why, by the end of each quest, you’ll likely feel more focused, patient, clever and happy.

Your experiences will vary and I make no promises. Still, that’s a common outcome, even from the first quest.

And the rewards only go richer as you practice finding the Soul Citadel.

Check out the schedule and sign up here, where one modest payment unlocks every quest in August I offer:
