Selfishness and ego are the mothers of invention

So-called impure motives can lead to great things.

Alexander the Great invaded Persia out of spite and a thirst for glory. It’s lucky for you he did – that spread Greek culture far enough that democracy, reason and a common language could endure through the following centuries.

Churchill refused to buckle to the Nazis because he was obsessed with his own place in history. His attitude was like what have you done for me lately, only directed towards himself. “Yeah, I defeated Adolf, but I didn’t defeat the Soviets. I could have done more!”

Tesla and Edison duked it out for fun and profit.

I’ll take virtuous acts from impure people over the inverse.

And there’s another cool thing to consider about being selfish:

Done right, it’s a tremendous source of creativity.

It’s funny – you can be trying to solve other people’s problems out of the goodness of your heart. But to get the really good ideas, injecting a little selfishness into the process can help a lot.

How?

Well, that’s something I teach in the Psident System.

Will it lead to more selfish behaviour or a self-centred attitude?

Nah – anymore than shimmying your hips leads you a fashion contract in Milan.
