Why you should conform

Everyone talks about being themselves and breaking free of their social programming.

No one questions whether or not they should.

It seems so obvious. Letting your unique light shine into the world, rather than bury it and be a bland, obedient citizen? Of course you should do that!

The things that seem the most obvious, though, sometimes need the hardest questioning.

Where did society’s expectations of you come from?

Through millions of people over dozens of generations, trying to figure out what makes society stable.

“People in olden times were dumb and intolerant!” What, because they couldn’t recall the speed of light off the top of their heads? You wouldn’t last an hour as a shepherd. Both of those require intelligence, but I can tell you right now which of them is harder.

“There’s more to life than just work and TV!” And who told you that? Was it a TV show?

Face it – you’ll be happier if you stop focusing on what makes you so preciously unique and special, and focus more on how society expects you to contribute.

You might wonder if I’m being serious here.

The more interesting question is whether you’re thinking about my points or rejecting them before they can disrupt any of your psychological safety nets.

Either way, it doesn’t matter.

Want to break free of society’s constraints or thrive by finding your place within them?

The first step is to remember that Your Story Isn’t About You.

No one thrives when suffering from delusions of being a protagonist.

Free yourself from those delusions – not your obligations – here:
