Drowning on dry land

Many cultures have a myth of a great flood that swept across the land.

One explanation is that this flood actually happened. These stories are a racial memory of that time, filtered and distorted by time.

Maybe this is true.

But then again, many cultures have a myth of a hero descending into the underworld and stealing something from the dark gods. That doesn’t seem like an ancient memory told through legends – that seems like things we’ve made up.

The similarities might just be because humans are similar, no matter the time or place.

These flood myths might be so common because life is chaotic and so is the ocean. Oceans seem to move of their own accords, the weather changing unpredictably, refusing even to be contained to its domain.

When the ocean rises, the land drowns.

That’s why when life feels chaotic and overwhelming, it’s like a flood. It can be like drowning on dry land.

As for descending into the underworld… well, there’s a depth of your mind, so far beneath conscious awareness where death and dreaming are the same thing. You can go so deeply inside that you never come out.

That’s extremely rare.

But many of us have experienced a taste of that – a dream so deep it felt like you were dissolving..

Anyone who can navigate the depths of their own mind and safely return will bring treasures with them.

I don’t know. This is all conjecture and it’s unprovable.

It probably doesn’t impact your life either way.

Instead, let’s talk about something that will.
