Food intolerances.
With RFK Jr having a better platform, it’s a topic that’s in the media cycle now.
Among a thousand other things.
And a question that often comes up is… why? Why is, say, gluten intolerance now a thing? Where was it two centuries ago?
It’s not hard to run through the options:
Everyone with that all died of malnutrition. If your diet is mostly bread and you can’t process bread, you’re in trouble.
But then you’d wonder why those genes still persist in the population. There’s a reason white folks metabolise dairy better than others – that comes from a long history of farming the stuff.
Second possibility:
The problem isn’t gluten. Wheat makes folks feel sick because of what farmers spray it with.
Then of course there’s the hygiene hypothesis. Our environments are too clean so how immune systems go haywire, leading to all sorts of strange medical issues.
I’d be surprised if this wasn’t a factor, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only cause.
After that, we get less probable explanations like it’s nothing but mass hysteria.
That leaves one clear possibility here. Maybe we’re not so much having food insensitivity as poison sensitivity.
It fits the facts the best.
But who knows. I’m not a doctor. Maybe it’s one of the many, many, many other ways the modern world deviates from what works for us.
There’s no shortage of those.
Maybe it’s time to get back to basics.
