Social scientists confuse cause and effect.
That’s not their fault – I don’t blame them for going astray in the face of human nature. It’s a complex field.
But I do blame them for not showing any humility in the face of it.
Social scientists noticed that kids with high self-esteem also were better in class and were less delinquent. “Self-esteem causes good behaviour!” they shouted from their ivory towers. So they pumped a generation or two of kids full of fake self-esteem.
Woops, now they’re deranged narcissists.
It’s almost as if being a good kid caused them to have high self-esteem…
Social scientists noticed that homeowners were better citizens. “That’s because they have a stake in the system and have stable roots!” they shouted from their ivory towers. So they rejigged the financial system so poorer folks could taken on bigger mortgages.
Woops, now they have a financial crisis on their hands.
It’s almost as if being a good citizen correlates with being responsible enough to work hard, study hard, save well and be part of a community…
This trend could go deeper than most folks realise. There’s a theory – unproven, but intriguing – that the conventional wisdom around junk food is backwards.
Eating junk food and being obese correlate. The conventional wisdom is that eating junk food makes you fat. But there’s a theory out there that says the reverse. It says being fat changes your hormones in a way that makes you crave junk food.
Either could be true, or both, or neither.
The point is to be humble in the face of reality.
An existential question is whether it’s better to believe you’re a divine spark in a loving universe that cares about you, or to believe you’re a primitive, flawed meat machine filled with base instincts and bad reasoning skills.
Filthy hippies say the first with unearned certainty.
Fedora-wearing nihilists who pretend atheism is the height of enlightenment say the latter.
They’re both wrong in the most dangerous way: they’re both correct but their ideas are incomplete.
Both are True, yet both together don’t fully describe life and the cosmos.
That’s why Christianity reigns supreme among faiths, philosophies and worldviews.
You’re special enough for God to have created you with loving care, endued with a soul and celebrated in heaven.
You’re so pathetic and sinful that God had to take human form, suffer and die just to give you a shot at salvation.
Both of those are True, yet no other religion says this. New Agers talk about a loving, intelligent, nurturing universe, but their universe is cold and indifferent. Feeling good vibes isn’t loving – if someone you love is in the ER, you don’t send them a postcard saying you hope they feel better.
If you Truely love them, you do whatever you can to save them.
That, right there, only describes the Christian God. He suffered for you, which is the only definition of love that makes sense.
He wants you to thrive – not materialistically, but spiritually and emotionally.
As a Christian, I want that for you too, no matter who you are.
That’s why I created this:
