Folks will tell you how great visualisation is.
How it trains your mind to create whatever you want. Whether you’re after love, money, God or happiness, visualising – so they say – can help.
Eh.
I mean, it can work. I’ve seen it do delightful things for people. If it works for you, I’m thrilled.
But…
Not everyone is good at seeing things in their mind. My mental images tend to be fuzzy. That’s better than anyone with aphantasia, who can’t make images in their imagination at all.
I’m better at picturing abstractions than real scenes – like my mind is filled with surrealist art instead of photographs.
Whether you’re the same as me or you can see unreal things in HD, you can do better.
Visualisation is great, but mentalisation is even better. It’s the difference between watching a movie with the sound off and experiencing the events for real.
Mentalisation engages all the “senses” of your mind. It weaves in abstractions like time and narrative. Locations, progress, nature, metaphor, conversation, even altered states of consciousness – they all feed into mentalising.
Weirdly, most folks find mentalising easier than visualising, even though it’s a much richer experience.
Whether your imagination is sharp and crisp, or fuzzy as all hell, it doesn’t matter. Mentalising is like visualising on rocket fuel and Redbull.
It’s the easiest, funnest way I know to engage with your goals, creating new ideas and harnessing states like confidence.
And if you don’t know what you want?
This will probably provide a lot of clarity.
And at least you’ll experience a long, relaxing and enjoyable quest. There are few better ways to spend an hour alone than this.
